Jogjakarta is an excellent base for some interesting side trips around Java. At the heart of the city is the Kraton or Sultan`s palace, which has done for the past 250 Years. Most of the interesting tourist sites in Jogja are around the Kraton area itself. To the south of Jogjakarta is Parangtritis . It is here that the Sultan of Yogyakarta ccomes for ceremonies connected with the legendary Goddes of the southern ocean, Kanjeng ratu Kidul. An hour`s drive from Jogjakarta takes you to Borobudur, the most celebrated ancient Monument in Indonesia. Just out of Jogjakarta to the north east , along the road to Surakarta lies the Prambanan temple complex. Adjacent to the temple complex is a large, modern, open - air – theatre where the Ramayana Ballet festival takes place every month during the dry season.
